The History, PhD prepares students for careers in college teaching, digital media, publishing, educational administration, public history, and historical research. There is no language requirement for MA students. All students, M.A. and Ph.D., must be proficient in the English language. The individual requirement shall be determined by the thesis supervisor in consultation with the student and Director of Graduate Studies. Please note that Ph.D. and M.A. thesis students working in U.S. or British history, particularly those working on topics in diplomatic history, may need and be required to develop and demonstrate proficiency in one or more languages other than English.
The Graduate School has established English language requirements for foreign applicants. In 2011 the minimum TOEFL score for most foreign students was 90 for the internet-based test, 233 for the computer-based test, and 577 for the paper-based test. Department of History Foreign Language Requirement (revised November 2011) All graduate students in History should be able to use historical sources or literature in languages other than English. Consequently, all students in the M.A. and Ph.D programs in History at UNM must fulfill the following foreign language requirement.
PhD students must fulfill at least one language requirement by the beginning of Fall semester of the 2nd year (i.e., within the Fall, Spring, or Summer of the 1st year in the program). The second language requirement should then be fulfilled before the beginning of Fall semester of the 3rd year and before, or at least within, the semester in which the PhD comprehensive exam is taken.
